IC Information

Name: Jinora
Age: 11
Canon:
Canon Point: Current (after Book 3, Chapter 13 “Venom of the Red Lotus”)
Physical Description:

Possessions: Jinora isn’t being pulled from anywhere so theoretically any of her possessions would be accessible at Air Temple Island. However, the main items she'll be seen with are:
- an airbender staff that turns into a glider
- some kind of book
Companion: Not strictly companions or pets, but Jinora does have a strong connection with the spirits and as such can often be found in the company of some of them.

Personality:
"Curiosity killed the owlcat, but satisfaction brought it back." Jinora has spent her whole life eager to learn and know just about everything about anything. The first airbender born in her generation, she spent her childhood learning all she could about the culture her father was trying so hard to preserve. Meditating, airbending, stories of gurus and locations- she takes after her father in that she finds even the most boring stories interesting and worth remembering and sharing. Of course, her thirst for knowledge didn't stop there. She read books of all kinds: fiction, non-fiction, romance, books about animals, the stories of her grandfather and his friends' adventures... She truly enjoys reading not just for the information it provides but also for the sake of the act itself. She's also proven to be very absorbent of the things she reads and hears, such as knowing the old rules to get into Wan Shi Tong's library, the science behind how a radio works, and the geographic placement of fire ferrets. Sometimes this can come across as her trying to show off or annoying to people that honestly just don't care, but she hasn't let that stop her from sharing yet.

Along with her general studiousness she's also a lot quieter and calmer than her younger siblings. While they run around and talk anyone within hearing distance's ears off Jinora would rather be reading or playing with her spirit friends most of the time. Sometimes this means their personalities can overpower hers, such as when she's trying to ask someone a question, but she tries not to let it get to her too much. Plus, just because she's calmer most of the time doesn't mean she is all of the time. When she's really excited she can launch into just as many questions as them if not more because of her strong desire to learn. And just because she generally prefers reading doesn't mean she can't be found running around and playing with her younger siblings on occasion, too. She has an eagerness and enthusiasm and silliness all her own that just doesn't get shown as intensely as Ikki and Meelo's.

Perhaps partly because she's the oldest and partly because of her own natural inclinations Jinora is also pretty mature for her age. She cares a lot for her family and is always trying to cheer them up or make them feel better, such as when she hugs her father after he has some trouble teaching Korra and when she holds her siblings during times when they're upset. While she never got a chance to experience nearly as much pressure as her father and grandfather did at having to carry on the Air Nation (as her sister came along only three years after her) she did always know that as the oldest she was going to have the responsibility to help carry it on as well and is very dedicated to this role... even after she got lucky enough to have airbending siblings, too. Still, she tries her hardest to look out for people in whatever way she can.

Throughout her whole life Jinora has had a big connection to the spirits and the spirit world. She would play with the spirits that would flock around her and tell her family they were "imaginary friends" so as not to concern them. Even now that the spirits and humans are interacting a lot more thanks to Korra leaving the portals open she still gets along with most of them famously and honestly and truly believes that it was the best decision to make and that the world is a better place for it. Back in Book Two she manages to not only be a spirit guide for Korra and help her get into the Spirit World, but also to find Raava's spirit when it looked like she was lost. As far as the light spirit Raava goes it appears that Jinora was able to form some sliver of a temporary connection to her as well, being able to see a statue of Wan and her glowing when Korra opened the portals and also helping Korra find her, but whether this is because of her connection with Korra or with spirits in general at play hasn't been delved into.

Jinora also really starts to show some leadership abilities. Even in the beginning she's always been very compassionate, adopting Korra almost immediately into her family as a sort of older sister and cheerfully helping Mako, Bolin, and Asami move in when they have nowhere else to go. Later, bolstered by the fact that she's not only been able to help Korra but also by the world's changes (spirits and humans living together, airbenders appearing) she's shown willingness to help teach and guide the new airbenders and do everything she can to help Korra not only as the Avatar but also as her friend. When Korra was battling Zaheer and many of the adults were injured and unable to help, Jinora pointed out that there hadn't been so many airbenders in one place in a long time and led the group to help Korra bring Zaheer down, and no one questioned or hesitated in following her direction.

Jinora has also shown considerable courage and selflessness throughout the show as well. Even back when Air Temple Island was under attack by Equalists, a terrifying organization led by a man who could remove bending, she jumped into action to help "her dad's ex-girlfriend." She's also risen to the occasion several times since then, especially when Korra needed a guide to help her enter the spirit world. Despite never having been to it herself Jinora helped her get there and continued to want to help even after getting into trouble. When she was being held and threatened by Unalaq to get Korra to do what he wanted, she told Korra not to listen to him even as her spirit was under attack. Even though she was probably terrified she still wanted to help Korra and the world, and even after getting free rather than return to her body she left to go try and help Korra once more. There really isn't anything she wouldn't do not only for the people she loves but also, on a broader scale, there aren't a lot of things she wouldn't do for the world as a whole.

Of course, the fact remains that Jinora is still only an eleven year old girl and as mature as she gets in some regards she's still just as immature as an eleven year old girl can be in others. Despite her love of books and stories she sometimes has a little trouble realizing that just because she's read something in a book that doesn't mean it's the best advice to give to people in real life. Case in point: she actually told Korra a story about a woman burning down a whole country while on a dragon before throwing herself into a volcano as if this was a great example to follow. As far as romance goes, she's very interested in the love life of not only fictional characters but also the people around her, loving to tease and hear from Korra about her crush on Mako and wanting to hear how her parents met. She might romanticize things a little bit, but actually getting a crush on a boy herself has helped that a little. Despite blushing and hugging and kissing him (on the cheek!) she has not voiced any thoughts about burning down countries for him, so at least on that front she's gotten more in tune with reality.

She does enjoy acting like she's older than she actually is. When Kai suggested that she deserved to get her airbending master tattoos she ends up agreeing and bringing it up to her father. When he doesn't agree she gets upset and argues with him, even bringing up the fact that she has a better connection to the spirits than he ever will (a sore spot of his shown a season prior.) Even later when she's cooled down a little she says that her father is treating her like a kid when she's actually all grown up. While she has shown able to handle herself by this point and does end up receiving her tattoos by the end of the season anyway, this outburst sounds exactly like something many children would say about their parents... and eleven year olds are hardly"grown up." Plus even with her insisting that she's an adult she'll still go to her parents and family and friends for comfort in tough situations, like when she spends the night in her parents bed with her siblings while worried about a kidnapped Korra. As much as she wants to be an adult she still has some actual growing up to do, and isn't really ready to let some parts of childhood go.

Even though she loves her siblings, she can still be just as mean to them as any other older sister. Sometimes she'll even gang up on one of them with the other, like when she and Meelo picked on Ikki so much she ran away. Ikki called her "mean and bossy" and it's true that she can be both of those things. As patient as she can be it's not an overflowing quality of hers and she can get annoyed with their antics sometimes (not that she has to be annoyed to be mean, of course. that's just a special power older siblings have.) Sometimes she can take things too seriously. Even Kai, the boy she has a crush on, isn't immune to some bossiness as Jinora shushes him when he tries to get her to sneak away from her father's latest airbender lesson. She thinks that her intelligence and knowledge will be able to get her out of any situation (typical airbender behavior!) but this isn't always the case and can in fact backfire on her such as when she was sure she would be able to enter Wan Shi Tong's library by providing not only a new piece of knowledge but also the information that she was the granddaughter to one Avatar and friend to another, only to get kidnapped and handed over to Unalaq soon after.

In all, despite her age and inexperience in a lot of things Jinora is truly dedicated to helping her friends, family, and even the world and that hasn't gone unnoticed. Now that she's been declared a master and received her tattoos she appears eager and excited to help in any way she can with keeping the world in harmony.
